Potato Boy is a regular potato. Just like you.
Potatropy (Pronounced Po-tay-tro-pea) is an illustrated graphic novel created by artist Graham Cooling. Following the trails and tribulations of Potato Boy.
Taking the form of an online comic strip and comic book Graham started creating Potato boy back in 2017 as an inclusion into a Zine project called Null Point Something he has often used as a testing ground for new ideas. However over time found he was wanting to write more and more for the lovable slightly off putting spud that is Potato boy and so set him up his own space.
in 2019 it took the form of the first Potatropy print volume which you can can purchase here. Which looks at the origins of Potato boy and just how he became the tuber he is.
The first installation of an intended series “Potatropy” itself is a short illustrated concept graphic novel following a singular story arc of Potato boy with single page stand alone single page comics intertwined within it. The arc follows the origin of Potato boy and how he came to be whilst taking a look at societal constructs all under the guise of potatoes. Graham used the Graphic novel itself a vehicle for discussing ideas and giving an audience a relatable character which may help them
consider their own situations all be it in a surreal set up of a world filled with potatoes.
“My work deals with day to day philosophy and often has existential themes which looks at modern society and social issues in detail; attempting to break down some of the more mundane aspects of life into something interesting or funny in order to expand a dialogue on the subject. As such it can be quite surreal and a little dry.”
Volume one is available now through Graham or via Amazon and you can catch regular single frame comic on the the Potato Boy instagram.
